Swine Flu pandemic figures revised
Threat of impact reduces
The Department of Health has now downgraded the expected impact of swine flu on the UK.
Previously, it was estimated that 30% of the population would catch it, now the estimate has been revised to 12%. This means at the peak of the pandemic 1.5 million people may become ill and that 5% of people could be absent from work compare to the 12% previously estimated. These would be in addition to normal winter absence rate.
Last week there were 27,000 new swine flu cases - up from 18,000 the week before. And the numbers are likely now to double every fortnight, according to The Health Protection Agency.
This week also sees the start of the swine flu vaccination program. Those deemed to be at most risks in the population will be given the jab first.
Whilst good news that the impact will be not as severe as first expected all business need to ensure their IT systems have adaquate continuity in place in case key IT staff catch it and then are off ill as a conseqnce.
